Accreditation and Recognition
The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is developed by food industry experts from retailers, manufacturers and food service organisations to ensure it is rigorous and detailed, yet easy to understand.
First published in 1998, the Standard is now in its seventh issue and is well-established globally. It has evolved with input from many leading global specifiers.
It provides a framework to manage product safety, integrity, legality and quality, and the operational controls for these criteria in the food and food ingredient manufacturing, processing and packing industry.
SAAS has provided technical assistance and verification to the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) as a means of promoting workplace conditions in accordance with human rights, ILO conventions and national
labor law. BSCI, a program of the Foreign Trade Association of Europe, is designed to improve working conditions for the suppliers of BSCI’s participating member companies.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) promotes responsible management of the world’s forests. Its main tools for achieving this purpose are: standard setting, certification and labelling of forest products. The FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) system allows the tracking of FSC certified material from the forest to the consumer. Through this method, companies can show their commitment to the environment and responsible forest management. Only the ones that hold the FSC chain of custody certification are allowed to use the FSC trademarks and labels to promote their products.
Moreover, we do our best not to use any products, which could harm rainforests or affiliated animal habitats.
Overview
Rigid Boxes, also called set-up boxes, are sturdy and do not fold or collapse as foldable boxes do.They are often considered as high-end packaging solutions, especially when the value of the product is perceived as high, and they are used when the product within is heavy and in need of extra support. An iPhone box is an example of a rigid box.
Rigid Boxes’ value is perceived as higher by the consumer since expensive looking boxes usually correspond to better quality products.
There is a huge selection of materials and finishing for rigid boxes, which make them look and feel different to consumers.
Companies can customize rigid boxes as they prefer, in order to make them represent their brand in the best way possible. Rigid boxes are indeed a great branding and marketing tool.
Material
The material used for rigid boxes can either be Greyboard based or Wood. Greyboard consists of several layers of recycled fibers that give the box its strength and distinctive properties.
It is also commonly used for reinforcing the top and bottom of hand made paper bags. The cover material can either be Art Paper or Special Paper.
Art paper is whiter than white card, not as stiff, and allows for a high level of print quality. Not only is it used to cover Rigid Boxes where a premium print quality finish is required, but also for Hand Made Paper Bags.
Finishing
The Finishing processes include:
- Lamination
- Matt or Glossy Lamination
- Soft Touch Lamination
- Varnish
- Spot UV
- Hot Foil
- Embossment
- Debossment
Lamination is a thin plastic film, which is applied to paper to increase the paper’s strength and durability. It protects paper from humidity and is commonly also used for decorative reasons.
There are 4 types of lamination:
- Scratch Proof Lamination
- Glossy Lamination
- Matt Lamination
- Soft Touch Lamination
Varnish is a transparent layer of oil applied to protect the ink on the paper. It makes the product more durable and long lasting, resists tearing, and provides a degree of protection against water or grease. Varnish can be either Matt or Glossy.
Final Touches include: Hot Foil, UV/ Spot Varnish, Embossing, De-bossing.
Glossary – Paper
Art Paper
Art Paper is whiter than white card, not as stiff and allows for a high level of print quality. It is often used for hand made paper bags and to cover rigid boxes where a premium print quality finish is required.
Kraft Paper
Kraft paper is stronger than artpaper and white card and helps make a great environmental impression. Kraftpaper is commonly used for paper bags without lamination.
Greyboard
Greyboard consists of several layers of recycled fibers that gives it its strength and distinctive properties. Greyboard is commonly used for reinforcing the top and bottom of hand made paper bags, as well as for the base of rigid boxes.

Hot Foil
Hot or Cold Foil is applied to the paper to achieve a metallic stamping effect.
UV Spot Varnish
UV spot varnish is applied to paper wet and is then instantly dried by ultraviolet light.
Embossing
Embossing applies pressure to the reverse of the paper stock to alter the surface, giving it a three dimensional or raised effect.
Debossing
Debossing applies pressure to the front side of the paper stock forcing the material away or down from the paper surface.
